She Asked To Adopt The Dog No One Else Wanted

Melani Andrews had a rough few years including the loss of her husband as well as her dog, Lola, who had been there through the hard times. When they visited, her grandchildren noticed how lonely she had gotten. Everyone in her family agreed that the 72-year-old needed to adopt a new dog.

Maybe it was because she had been depressed and had seen some of the worst of life herself recently, but Melani decided that the dog she wanted to adopt needed to be the one that the shelter was having the hardest time finding a home for.

The introduced her to three little dogs that all met the qualifications. She fell in love with Jake.

Meet Jake

Of the three dogs, he really responded to Melani. She knew immediately that he was the right choice.

Jake was a rough looking 12-year-old terrier who had spent several months in the shelter after being picked up as a stray. He was also deaf, partially blind, and had terminal skin cancer. It was easy to see how he had become one of the shelters longest staying residents.

Melani knew she had to make this special little dog’s last bit of time on this planet as enjoyable as possible.

It was decided, Jake was the one she just had to bring home!

The workers at the Front Street Animal Shelter in Sacramento, California were thrilled that Jake would get to spend the rest of his time in a loving home. They made the adoption official. Jake was ready to go with Melani.

Life Outside the Shelter

Jake barked his goodbyes to the animal shelter workers, and off he went into his new life.

It took him a few minutes to get used to being in the car, but his nervousness quickly left. He was ready for a new chapter in life.

Melani told The Dodo:

“He laid his head in my right hand, and I drove with my left hand. It was like he was saying, ‘OK, let’s see how we do together.’ It was really cute. I’ve never had a dog do that to me.”

He settled in just as quickly when they arrived home. He found a new favorite chair and curled up for a nap shortly after getting there. It looked like he was finally where he belonged.

Puppy Love

Jake’s health seems to be doing a little better as well. Melani thinks he may have another year or two in him still. However long he has, she is making sure that they both treasure every moment of it. Jake is getting all of the love and attention a dog can get.

Melani is benefiting from the experience as well.

“Every day I laugh a little bit more. It’s not so lonesome. I think he knows that I love him because he’ll come over to me and he’ll rub up against me and ask me to rub his backside. And then he’ll nose me with his nose. And a dog that doesn’t know that somebody loves him wouldn’t be doing anything like that.”

We think that’s just about the sweetest thing.
